“Jamey Gray: Irrational Aesthetics”

On view September 12 through October 14, 2016 Hours:  Wednesday–Saturday 11:00 a.m. –4:00 p.m., or by appointment

“Jamey Gray: Irrational Aesthetics” will be on view at Arts on Main’s Kiser Gallery beginning September 12, 2016. Arts on Main is a non-profit exhibition space and artists’ studios facility located in former Federal Reserve Bank building in historic downtown Gastonia, NC. The gallery is free and open to the public. A closing reception will be held on Saturday, October 8 from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. It will include beer, wine, and BBQ along with live music featuring experimental guitar sketches by 1970s Film Stock.

This exhibition will include 26 works made between 2014 and 2016. Jamey will be showing a mixture of mid to large scale canvases and numerous digital prints produced in small editions. This will be his first solo show of new work since the early 2000s.

Jamey uses the term artistic participation to describe his practice of sourcing existing datasets (number, text, image) and transforming them into new works using visualization and diagramming. As a child of post-minimalism and op and sibling of post-internet artists, his paintings and digital prints have a controlled execution and grid structure coupled with colors he calculates from sets of images mined from social media. Mathematics, art history, and popular culture are central themes in his work. Jamey believes that meaning is created from the interplay between the viewer and the work once it’s shared openly and the artist cannot be a part of that interaction. He largely removes his presence as artist from the work to facilitate that process.

Jamey Gray was born in 1977 in Gastonia, North Carolina, where he currently lives and works. He received a BFA in Painting from Pratt Institute in 2001 and has exhibited in numerous galleries and non-profit spaces throughout the United States since 2015. He was recently included in the 80x80 show at the Mint Museum Uptown and also has work included during the month of September at Steuben Gallery D, Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY. Later this year, Jamey will be included in the Winter Show at the Greenhill Center for NCArt.

Photography Show:

The Gaston County Art Guild hosts its second annual photography show, "A Moment in Time", in the gallery at Arts on Main in downtown Gastonia.  The exhibit will run from August 17th to September 10th.
This show is comprised of three categories; color, black and white and open, with awards totaling $450. Ribbons of first place and honorable mention were given in each category.
Show chairman was Davis Goodman, www.foreverand3days.com. Show judge was Randy McNeilly,

We would like to thank Davis Goodman for taking charge of the show and those who helped support it. Because Davis was the chairperson, he chose not to enter the competition and instead displayed some of his beautiful photographs.
We were pleased and honored to have our judge, Randy McNeilly in attendance. Randy's comments on the winning photographs were appreciated not only by the artists, but also those attending the reception. We are rarely fortunate to have the judge in attendance to discuss why he chose a particular piece of work.

Congratulations to the 2016 winners of our second annual photography show!
