Request for Artwork

The City of Gastonia would like to present its Sister City in Gotha, Germany with a work of art created by a Gastonia or Gaston County artist that is representative of our City. The artwork will be given as a gift to Gotha city officials when a Gastonia contingent visits Gotha in May. The City will provide a $750 honorarium to the artist whose work is selected as the gift for presentation. Artwork or full-color photos of the artwork should be submitted for consideration by Friday, April 12. The selection will be made by a committee or jury by Friday, April 26. Individual artists may submit up to three (3) works. Following are some guidelines for submissions:

• Art can be in any medium; however, one of the considerations for selection will be size and portability. The artwork should be of a size and weight that can be easily, economically and safely shipped or carried on a plane.

• Artwork should be representative of Gastonia, its people, surroundings, heritage, history, etc.

• Preference will be given to original artwork; but prints and other reproductions of the artist’s original work will be considered.

• Artwork should be submitted in a form ready for presentation, e.g., two-dimensional art such as paintings should be matted and framed, if appropriate.

• The value of the artwork should clearly be at least equivalent to the value of the honorarium.

• Artist should include a current bio, at least three photos of other works, and a listing of awards and/or works either on display or in collections.

The Gaston Arts Council is having a fundraising event on May 31st

The Gaston Arts Council is having a fundraising event on May 31st, from 6:30 – 9:30 at the Loft. The focus is a silent action of work from local artists. Donations are requested, but a minimum bid can be set. This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase your work to known art supporters. We would love to have pieces in all different mediums: sculpture, paintings, jewelry, pottery, fiber art and anything else we have missed. If you are interested in entering a piece for the event, contact Chandra Wilkinson at the Gaston Arts Council 704-853-2728.

Thank you,

A call for volunteers !!!

Volunteers are needed for several up and coming events: “A Natural View” we need one more volunteer on Saturday, March 8th and Sunday, March 9th to help Kit Kakassy and Lori Lytle with Art take-up. Please call show Chairwoman Cama Tadlock at 803-222-3600 to volunteer. Student shows for Gaston County Art Schools to help Connie Houser on Monday, April 14 and April 21, from 2:30 to 6:30, two people needed, one Runner and one hanger. Volunteer judges are Jennifer Clifton and Kim Wallis, elementary hangers on April 28 are Phyllis Warnock, Lori McAdams and Lori Lytle. Contact Connie or Lori Lytle to volunteer. We desperately need a group of about 6 people to organize "Run for the Money". This is our Major Fundraiser, and if we don't participate, we will Be "Out of the Money". This one event alone has enabled us to do many things we could not have done, and we have benefited by receiving several thousand dollars from this in the past 6 years. The event will be held on Saturday, April 19, in the morning, so plans need to get started. We already have a tent and table, all we need is some creative talent to organize it. We also need runners in many different age groups if you know of any. Don't be afraid to help out, it’s fun !!! Also needed is a host or hostess for the annual picnic in June. It shouldn’t cost you anything, just a place to gather. In August, before the start of our fall season, a chairman and co-chairman will be needed for the "Visual Harvest" show held at Gaston College, so we need to secure the two chairmen before summer break. Remember, no chairman, no show !!!

A Word From Missy

We are so PROUD to say that we have over 100 paid members of the Art Guild this year. But, we are so SAD to say that we have only a handful of members who volunteer to help out with various jobs and projects that need to be done to keep the guild going. Have you done YOUR part to help out? We need YOU! The guild has a good reputation and is financially stable, but many of you are depending on the handful to do all the tasks involved. So, if you want YOUR guild to survive, please call Lori Lytle to volunteer for at least one of our projects or events. Thanks!! Missy Turney, President

And in the same light

Apologies to all members of the Guild for the noticeable lapse of time between Newsletters, announcements and a prospectus for the recent Mini Show. We ask that you accept our promise that we will correct any logistics problems and provide Guild members with the level of service expected.
